Does ChatGPT Recommend MSPs? What We Saw in 1,500 Buyer Prompts

Yes, ChatGPT names MSPs when buyers ask who to hire. We tested 1,500 buyer prompts. Here is who it named, what it read and why the names change.

Does ChatGPT recommend MSPs? Yes. ChatGPT names specific MSPs when a buyer asks who to hire. In our October 2026 test of 1,500 MSP buyer prompts, every answer recommended companies by name. ChatGPT searched the web first. It read best-of lists and MSPs' own websites. It named about five MSPs per answer. The names change from run to run. What matters is how often it names you.

Note on verification: Every number in this post comes from Aquinel's own tests. We ran 1,500 MSP buyer prompts through ChatGPT with web search on, US location, in October 2026. We ran one Dallas question three more times on 24 October 2026. These tests are small and not peer reviewed. We name no MSPs from the answers. ChatGPT changes often, so treat this as a snapshot.

You run an MSP business, a managed service provider (MSP). Picture a law firm office manager in Dallas. She opens ChatGPT. She types, "Who is a good managed IT services company for a 30-person law firm in Dallas?"

We wanted to know whether ChatGPT gives her names or stops at "it depends." So we tested it. We ran 1,500 buyer prompts through ChatGPT in October 2026. Then we asked that exact Dallas question three times on 24 October 2026.

Does ChatGPT recommend MSPs by name?

Yes. All 1,500 of our buyer prompts got company recommendations. ChatGPT did not dodge the question. It gave names, short reasons and often a phone number.

Across the 1,500 answers, ChatGPT named 7,564 MSPs. That works out to about five names per answer.

The Dallas runs named slightly fewer. The first run named three MSPs. The second and third runs named four each. Every run also gave a monthly price range. Every run gave the buyer a checklist of questions to ask.

So your buyer doesn't get ten blue links. She gets a short list. It's usually five names or fewer. In the Dallas runs, one MSP was listed first every time. If you're not on that list, she may never hear your name.

How does ChatGPT pick which MSPs to recommend?

It searches first. In our 1,500-prompt test, ChatGPT ran about 2 web searches per buyer question. Then it read two kinds of pages.

The first kind is the best-of list. Think "11 Best IT Providers for Dallas Law Firms." ChatGPT cited a best-of or top-N list in 51% of our prompts.

The second kind is the MSP's own website. ChatGPT cited at least one MSP's own site in 95% of our prompts. Of the MSPs it named, 76% had their own site cited. That's 5,765 of 7,564.

The Dallas runs show this in action. One best-of list appeared as a source in all three runs. A Dallas MSP wrote that list. It ranks itself first. ChatGPT used it anyway. In one run, ChatGPT told the buyer, "A recent provider comparison ranked it first."

ChatGPT also opened the MSPs' own pages. Three of the named MSPs had pages built for law firms. ChatGPT cited those pages directly. It quoted the legal software each one listed.

Does ChatGPT recommend the same MSPs every time?

No. The names move between runs. This surprised us.

We asked the Dallas question three times, with the same words, on the same day, from the same location. ChatGPT named seven different MSPs in total.

MSP (names hidden)Runs that named it
MSP A3 of 3, listed first each time
MSP B2 of 3
MSP C2 of 3
MSP D1 of 3
MSP E1 of 3
MSP F1 of 3
MSP G1 of 3

Source: Aquinel three-run test, 24 October 2026.

Only MSP A held its place. Four MSPs showed up once and did not return.

We see the same thing in our own category. On 17 September 2026, we asked ChatGPT "best ai seo agency for MSPs" five times. Twelve agencies showed up across the five runs. Not one appeared in all five. We were named in two.

What does this mean for you? A screenshot shows one run, and the next run may look different. Ask the same question five or ten times and count how many answers name you. That ratio is the number to track.

What kind of MSP does ChatGPT recommend?

The kind it can check. Look at the buyer's question again. It has three parts: an industry, a city and a size. ChatGPT looks for pages that match those parts.

Here is how often each page type got cited in our 1,500 prompts:

Page type on the MSP's siteShare of prompts cited
Homepage78%
Industry pages55%
City or location pages35%
Service pages34%
Industry and city pages19%
Pricing page6%
About page3%
Partner or certification pages1%

Industry pages beat almost everything except the homepage. The About page barely mattered. Partner badges mattered even less.

The Dallas answers show why. ChatGPT's reasons came straight from the MSPs' own words. It named the legal software each MSP listed. It pointed out one MSP's published pricing. It quoted a client size range from another MSP's FAQ.

That last one is a warning. The FAQ said its typical clients have 50 to 200 users. So ChatGPT told our 30-person law firm to confirm fit first. Your own words became ChatGPT's reason to hesitate.

So write your pages for the buyer you want. State the industries you serve. State the client sizes you serve. State the software you support.

Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my MSP?

In our reading, it usually comes down to four gaps.

  1. You're not on the lists it reads. Search Google for "best IT providers for [industry] in [city]". Those lists feed ChatGPT. It cited one in 51% of our prompts.
  2. You have no page for the buyer's industry or city. A general "managed IT services" page doesn't match "law firm in Dallas." Industry pages got cited in 55% of prompts.
  3. ChatGPT can't read your site. OpenAI's search crawler is called OAI-SearchBot. Some firewalls block it by default. Ask your web person to check your robots.txt file and your firewall.
  4. Your facts are vague. No software names. No client sizes. No price ranges. ChatGPT has nothing specific to repeat.

Fixing these doesn't guarantee a spot. Nobody can promise you one. Anyone who does is overselling.

How do you check if ChatGPT recommends your MSP?

You can do this yourself in about an hour.

  1. Write ten questions your best buyers would type. Put an industry, a city and a company size in each one.
  2. Open a temporary chat in ChatGPT. Turn web search on. This keeps your history out of the answer.
  3. Ask each question five times. Use a new chat for every run.
  4. Write down every MSP named. Write down every source ChatGPT cites.
  5. Count your ratio for each question. For example, "named in 2 of 5."
  6. Repeat once a month. Watch the trend, not one result.

A single jump from 2 of 5 to 3 of 5 could be noise. Gains that hold for three months are worth trusting.

Look at the sources you wrote down. They tell you which lists to get onto. It also tells you which competitor pages ChatGPT trusts. We wrote up the page types in detail in the 6 pages ChatGPT reads before it recommends an MSP.

The bottom line

ChatGPT does recommend MSPs. It names about five per answer. It picks them from best-of lists and from the MSPs' own pages. It changes its picks from run to run.

The number to track is how many of ten runs name your MSP. If you'd rather have someone run that check for you, our free audit does exactly that. You can also see how we work on our services and SEO for MSPs pages.
